Curators:

The “Mattis Teutsch. Avant-garde and constructive realism” project is based on exhibiting the content of an interdisciplinary research carried out by artist Szilárd Miklós about Hans Mattis Teutsch, an important name from the European historical avant-garde. The curator of the exhibition is Mircea Nicolae. The research focuses on Mattis Teutsch’s last period of artistic production, which took place in Romania under the Communist regime. Also, the research follows the perception of these works in museum and patrimonial practices in Romania and Hungary from the 1960s to the present. Not last, the exhibition is an alternative to the absence of institutional museum research on Mattis Teutsch’s late work. Born in multi-ethnic Transylvania, Mattis Teutsch (1884-1960) is a painter, drawer, sculptor and art theorist. His name is associated with the abstract art of the interwar period, for which he is internationally recognized. Beginning with the 1930s, his creation continues with utopian constructivism, an avant-garde position on which – in spite of the overall misunderstanding of the public – he tries to keep himself until his death, only to be later perceived as too close to socialist realism. The recuperation of this last period of creation is the central stake of the exhibition.

The exhibition benefit of works and documents borrowed from museums and private collections and it will travel in January 2020 to the Kassák Museum in Budapest.

Museums and private collections: Brasov Art Museum, the Székely National Museum from Sfântu Gheorghe, Mattis Teutsch family collection from Brașov, the Irina Lukász collection, Rechnitzer collection from Győr, the MissionArt Gallery from Budapest, the Mattis Teutsch Archive – Tibor Almási, Győr.

Partners: Balassi Institute, Bucharest, CESI, MTVA, National Institute for Research and Development in Optoelectronics INOE 2000.

Project co-financed by AFCN.

What do the Aztecs have to do with a house located in the center of Bucharest that belonged to the Royal Family? What do the Native Americans have to do with the history of the city, with the history of the people who came and went through this house?

The walls of the courtyard of the BRD Scena9 Residence bear the images of a history that belongs to the ancestors of another place, said clumsy in an out of whack mixture of Aztec deities and elements of Byzantine iconography placed in this story "completely off the mark".

"Outside histories " is the first intervention on these walls integrated in the transformation process through which the space of the BRD Scena9 Residence has passed in the last three years. In 2016, the BRD Scena9 Residence opened its doors to the public for the first time presenting a special anniversary edition project NAG presenting ten curatorial speeches from the ten cities participating in this event in a “No Man's Land” to the public of Bucharest.

Three years later NAG continues the series of Focus projects at the BRD Scene9 Residence with ”Outside Histories" , a project that transforms the walls of the courtyard and adds a new layer of new history over what will probably remain the most "out of" history of the many overlapping. NAG invites the first four artists in a first episode of "Stories on from outside ", four names well known to the public: Pisica Pătrată, Robert Obert, Maria Balan and John Dot S.

We will have a vernissage “for real” for this project that will take place in the courtyard of the BRD Scena9 Residence during the event of the White Night of the Art Galleries between  7PM – 3AM, ending it in a live painting session in the presence of the public of this first part of “Outside histories”.

The end of the evening is soft. The birds went to sleep; the tide is slowly moving massive internal waves. Pieces of dead wood are hitting the stone shore. Quietly at first, with slow eye movements and very seldom bursts of rapid activity, pointing potential vitality. The eye starts to follow more intensely the undersea dynamics.  The wind is growing the movement of the trees and is awakening layers of less and less translucid dreams. Terrible, roaring, a great storm fills the air…

I'm not what you see. I'm not what you cannot see either. I dwell in the space between the mask and the skin. I'm never only here. Nor am I completly elsewhere. I'm in between projects, between relationships, between appointments, between jobs, in between texts. I'm climbing up stairs, jumping from one roof to the others, crossing tunnels, shooting little stars in order to get points, sliding down on lianas like in a Mario game. I was born on a shooting arrow. I'm tearing holes in pockets so as to leave a trail of mails, gestures, words, objects and feelings behind me in the hope the would help me to find my way back. Back in the between. I only feel myself only when I'm on the stage playing myself.
