Kulterra Gallery
str. Știrbei Vodă 104-106

Kulterra. A new art gallery. Through these few words we basically said everything. Nevertheless, in a city with a dynamic evading any concept, a city living by its own rhythm, prone to fabulous crashes and unconceivable expansions, punctual dissolutions and general reinventions, deep amnesias and surprisingly fresh renewals, the opening of a new art gallery is thusly both a normal and an exceptional event. It’s a rule and it’s an exception. It’s predictable and surprising. The usual yet so new... Contradiction and paradox is in the nature of Bucharest, which seem to live organically, fleeting the plans of architects and urbanists, defying the incapacity of budgets and adjusting its gaps through a communion of individual initiatives. Kulterra in this sense sets a good example. It is the newest private space for exhibitions from Bucharest, yet it developed on the place of an older cultural (and also private) space. It is literally “underground”, since the approx. 280 squa

Teona Toderel becomes the "first soloist" of the gallery with this exhibition entitled "I'm like a drop of water on a rock". A highly suggestive title because it surprises and at the same time reveals something of the secret of her recent works, in which the world is always presented in a blur, placed out of focus, focus which is directed at the raindrops (and their tracks) dripping on imaginary windows. Whether they represent urban scenes or landscapes, the works in this series by Teona Toderel are defined by these drops that drip on the "window", grabbing our attention, making us leave the reality beyond in the background. The drops are, therefore, nothing more than an alter-ego of the artist, they fluidly emphasize the interposition between the artist and reality; demystifying the pretense of objectively capturing reality and revealing an indisputable truth: we only see what the artist wants to show us , and the artist will always show herself (to us) no matter how well she camouflages herself in her own work. Through the open confession that Teona Toderel makes in the title of this exhibition, we learn that the drops of water are nothing more than transparent materializations of our own experiences, which makes us understand that, in fact, while she describes landscapes and corners of the world , she only introduces herself. Dynamic, fluid and ultimately corrosive, making us dig into our experiences and feelings, leaving traces and dissolving stiffness. Teona Toderel's works place us behind some windows, in fact, the paintings replace windows through which we look at the world created by the artist. A world that has rained on or is just beginning to get rained upon, while we are sheltered, "inside". Obviously, that interior is whatever space we are in when we contemplate any of these works, but – above all – it is our own interior. We ourselves become a space from which we contemplate, safely, through the "windows" of Teona Toderel, the worlds (or fragments of the world) through which she helps us travel.
