The exhibition translates, in the form of an art installation, the research carried out within the project SPELLS, CURES. THE 9TH DIMENSION. V2 focused on witchcraft practices, by exploring the way they naturally intertwine with common reality. The artistic vision acts upon the documentary material in the same way that magical thinking animates the banality of daily life. Ioana Cîrlig’s photographs, at the boundary between documentary and fiction, capture fragments from the field research in villages of Dobrogea and Maramureș, complemented by staged frames. The object installation, created by Teoharie Zugravu (the exhibition’s scenographer), displays the witchcraft toolkit—an array of common household tools that nonetheless possess well-defined magical functions and powers. The botanical illustrations by Hanna Hanuman present a selection of plants used in magical practices and rituals, well-known plants whose stories extend beyond their therapeutic or decorative properties. The VR installation, a collaborative work by: Aural Eye – visual design, Maria Balabaș and Mihai Balabaș – sound installation, Augmented Space Agency – developer, experiential design, translates into a contemporary form the immersive experience of incantation, using the most important instrument of witchcraft, one that has preserved its magical function to this day: the power of suggestion.
