"Neighbourhood watch" is a fragmentary and honest portrait of Bucharest, a city which gifts at every corner visual puns and involuntary poetry to the trained eye. Professional psychogeographer, Cristian Eduard Drăgan collects in his aimless walks textures, gestures, ads, unnecessary interventions, absurd collisions between objects, coincidences, uneven pavements, determined plants and sunbathing cats on car bonnets, all accidental conceptual-art installations. In this intuitive mapping of the city (an improvised mechanism caught between extremes in itself), the photographer gives up the safety of the directing programme and wanders not to find things, but to be found. Urban derive and instant photography as fight gestures against the need for control and order compulsions. The photographer becomes just a witness of an unplanned aesthetics: he uses unpredictable light and relies only on spontaneous interactions within the liminal space between observation and intervention. Cristian Eduard Drăgan arrives at Agenția București – the agency of the city as emotional state – guided by shadows, birds chirping, scaredy cats, and freshly baked bread scent. Bucharest only shows you what it wants you to see anyway, not what you're looking for.
